SC-401 Microsoft Information Security Administrator

The Information Security Administrator course equips you with the skills needed to plan and implement information security for sensitive data using Microsoft Purview and related services. The course covers essential topics such as information protection, data loss prevention (DLP), retention, and insider risk management. You learn how to protect data within Microsoft 365 collaboration environments from internal and external threats. Additionally, you learn how to manage security alerts and respond to incidents by investigating activities, responding to DLP alerts, and managing insider risk cases. You also learn how to protect data used by AI services within Microsoft environments and implement controls to safeguard content in these environments.

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the role of Microsoft Purview in modern information protection, including how it supports data security, compliance, and risk management in Microsoft 365 and AI-enabled environments.
  • Identify, classify, and label sensitive information using built-in and custom sensitive information types and sensitivity labels to protect organizational data across collaboration workloads.
  • Design and implement Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies to reduce the risk of accidental or intentional data leakage across Microsoft 365 services. 
  • Configure and manage data retention policies to meet regulatory, legal, and business requirements while ensuring proper data lifecycle governance.
  • Implement Insider Risk Management controls to detect, investigate, and respond to risky user behaviors involving sensitive data. 
  • Investigate security alerts and audit activities within Microsoft Purview to support incident response and compliance investigations. 
  • Apply information protection controls to AI scenarios, including safeguarding data accessed or generated by AI services such as Microsoft 365 Copilot. 
  • Align information protection strategies with organizational policies and risk objectives, collaborating with governance, compliance, and IT stakeholders to support secure AI adoption.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Purview compliance solutions
  • Foundational knowledge of Microsoft security and compliance technologies
  • Basic understanding of data protection and security concepts
  • Basic familiarity with Microsoft Purview features such as sensitivity labels, data loss prevention, and retention
  • Awareness of Microsoft Entra concepts and how Microsoft 365 Copilot accesses data
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft 365 data governance capabilities

You work with workload administrators, business application owners, and governance stakeholders to implement technology solutions that support these policies and controls.
